The name Batavia comes from The Batavian Republic which was a short-lived republic in the Netherlands at the turn of the nineteenth century which was itself named after the Batavii tribe that lived there in Roman times.
When the Erie Canal in 1825 bypassed Batavia, going well to the north at Albion and Medina, enabled Buffalo and Rochester to grow much faster, Batavia became a small industrial city in the heart of an agricultural area. It is on the New York State Thruway between Rochester and Buffalo. With those two Cities growing towards each other, Batavia is right in the middle and enjoying the benefits of each.
